Lettis Consultants International, Inc. (LCI) is an Earth Science consulting firm specializing in engineering geologic, seismic, and natural hazards investigations. LCI is a California state and federally certified small business headquartered in the San Francisco Bay Area with satellite offices in Sacramento, southern California and Georgia. LCI is dedicated to providing its clients with science-based solutions to technically challenging Earth Science problems. Company personnel have extensive experience conducting large, technically and logistically complex, multi-disciplinary studies for critical facilities such as nuclear power plants, dams, and other civil infrastructure. LCI also maintains a self-directed and self-funded research program aimed at developing the technical and scientific growth of employees and company capabilities.
Job Responsibilities
The successful candidate will support projects of moderate to high technical complexity within the state-of-practice in seismic hazard analysis. Work will be performed under the guidance of senior staff, with detailed technical review, while progressively developing independence and technical judgment.
Candidates will be responsible for completing defined technical tasks and project components in a self-directed manner, including:
- Conducting site-specific probabilistic and deterministic seismic hazard analyses (PSHA/DSHA).
- Performing site response analyses, including development and evaluation of subsurface profiles and dynamic soil properties.
- Processing, analyzing, and interpreting earthquake ground motion records for engineering applications.
- Performing and supporting earthquake time-history analyses, including development of input motions for evaluation of structural and geotechnical response.
- Developing input models and performing interpretation of analytical results for seismic hazard and ground motion studies.
- Interpreting geotechnical and geophysical investigation data (e.g., Vs profiles, borehole logs, surface wave testing) for application in seismic hazard and site response analyses.
- Applying principles of engineering seismology to support ground motion characterization and hazard modeling.
- Preparing technical documentation, figures, and reports in support of project deliverables.
- Providing technical support for proposals and business development efforts, including preparation of technical scopes and supporting materials.
With minimal supervision, candidates are expected to:
- Assist with project execution and anticipate near-term project needs.
- Assist with proposal and report preparation.
- Work with project teams and make technical recommendations.
- Complete assignments in a timely, organized, and accurate manner.
- Strive to maintain chargeability and become increasingly self-directed to identify ways to support project managers.
- Attend professional meetings and/or interface with professional consulting community.
- Participate in and support continuous improvement of company processes.
- Communicate with colleagues and clients tactfully and effectively, verbally and in writing.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Essential Qualifications

- Ability to procure a passport.
- Be able to represent LCI in a professional, business-like manner.
- Be highly organized and able to work within deadlines.
Knowledge/Skill Requirements
- MS or Ph.D. degree in engineering (geotechnical or civil/structural), seismology, or geophysics is required.
- Some professional experience (up to five years) in fields related to the degrees noted above is desirable but not necessary.
- Individual must possess an understanding of probabilistic seismic hazard analysis and site response analysis.
- Individual must possess an understanding of one or more of the following:
- Use of response spectra to design civil infrastructure, develop fragilities, and perform probabilistic risk analyses.
- Earthquake ground-motion models including their development and applicability.
- Estimation of seismic source properties (i.e., stress drops and path parameters such as crustal attenuation and kappa).
- Past research experience in earthquake engineering (e.g., work funded by National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program, NEHRP) or publications in peer-reviewed journals such as Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America (BSSA) or Earthquake Spectra are highly desirable.
- Individual must have specific experience in programming/software development in C(++,#), FORTRAN, Python, and/or Matlab.
- Must be able to learn software for communication, project management, and technical analysis.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret procedures, regulations, and technical information.
- Ability to effectively present ideas and technical information in writing and orally in a clear and concise manner and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
